This translation is intended for people who already know English and are learning Japanese. It is not intended to be used to learn English, because the sentences in English may use strange or awkward wording in order to illustrate the vocabulary and grammar of the original Japanese.

This translation is for the arcade version. Other versions may differ.

As in Operation Wolf, the Japanese in this game tends to be concise, much like newspaper headlines. Hence, sometimes particles will be omitted. As is fitting for military instructions, the game frequently uses the plain imperative form, which is uncommon in normal speech.

Game start[edit]

Japanese
作戦開始! 人質救出せよ
English
Operation initiated! Rescue the hostages.

せよ is one of the plain imperatives of する. (The other one is しろ, which is much more common in informal speech.) You will encounter it a lot in this game.

English

Japanese

English

Bad ending[edit]

Japanese
パイロット死亡脱出不能なった
English
The pilot is dead! Escape has become impossible.

The kanji 不 is a typical way to form negatives in kanji compounds, though you can't use it with every compound. It's analogous to the "im" in "impossible". (In this case, the positive form would be 可能 rather than just 能, but that's not true of all 不 words.)

Good ending[edit]

Japanese
ミッションコンプリート!
English
Mission complete!
Japanese
君達作戦見事に成功した
English
Your mission succeeded beautifully.

Note that the game uses 君達, which is plural, even if you're alone.

Japanese
これでしばし休息につけるであろう
English
With this, you will probably rest for a while.
Japanese
作戦指令来るのはいつか?
English
When will your next mission be?
Japanese
それは誰にも分からない
English
Nobody knows that.

You are dead[edit]

Japanese
致命傷受けた作戦失敗終った
English
You have sustained a lethal injury. Your mission has ended in failure.
