When it was born, it seemed to think that I, whom it immediately noticed, was its mother.
The よう after 思った here is obligatory, because you typically are not allowed to directly state what somebody or something else is thinking in Japanese, merely what they seem to be thinking. Hence, either "thought" or "seemed to think" are reasonable translations because they would both be said the same way in Japanese.
